Baby Breastfeeding Dos and Don’ts for Young Moms

Breastfeeding mom with babyWhen baby is born mother needs much rest and it will be right to accept help at this time from friends and family because tiredness can decrease the amount of milk. Try to remove the workload and invite hired helpmates if you can afford it.  Laundry and shopping can be done by other people too.

Dos:

  • You should have enough sun at day and keep away from artificial lighting at night not to disrupt sleep hormone cycle. It will also help your child to adapt to the day that lasts for 24 hours.
  • It’s very important to take care about your nipples as you feed your baby. In the beginning they will be sore, but the pain should not be sharp. Nursing should be correct and right latching is important. Your baby should not gulp air during nursing. When latching is wrong, tenderly stop it and make another try.
  • Empty your breasts in turn but let the baby switch them because if you forbid it you can deprive child of better and nutritious milk. It is recommended to feed the baby on demand especially on newborn period.
  • Try different breastfeeding positions to find the most convenient for you and your baby. You may prefer to feed your baby in a lying position. This is relaxing and can be a good opportunity to have rest for breastfeeding moms who are very tired during the day. Besides, this is safe to nurse the baby on the bed.
  • Some mothers practice co-sleeping and this removes the problem of getting up at night for nursing. In order to make co-sleeping safe, parents should acquire some bassinet in a side car style because it is desirable for baby to sleep on other surface and not share the same bed with adult.

Don’ts:

  • Should mothers apply to feeding with bottle? Lactation specialists do not recommend it but it can be more important for exhausted mother to have a good rest therefore supplementary feed can become a lifesaver in this case. Tired mother is more subjected to infection and depression. Four hour break will hardly bring harm to breastfeeding process.
  • Breast pump can be used sometimes not to break the milk supply but it should be used cleverly not to cause overproduction later on.
  • You should eat healthy food with vitamins to provide your child with them. Do not forget though that some vitamins can be toxic in big doses, for instance, vitamin A and D. It is also important to choose the right type of fats too. Omega-3 fatty acids contained in fish are the best fats.
  • Avoid coffee and alcohol. Caffeine entails irritation in a baby. Alcohol tells badly on milk production. Be careful with drugs and healing remedies. Make sure that they are not harmful for your baby.

Maybe, you already knew some of those tricks, good for you! But it is useful to make sure you do everything right!
